Some will argue that depressed people have a more accurate view of the world (maybe that is why they are depressed), than non-depressed people. People who think they are not much liked, are probably closer to the mark than those who believe that they enjoy universal love. A depressed person may have better judgment that a non depressed person. For instance, studies have shown that depressed and non depressed people are equally good at answering abstract questions. When asked about having control over over an external event, non depressed people typically believe they have more control than they actually do, and depressed people give a more accurate assessment.

In a study done with a video game, depressed people who played for 30 minutes, knew how many little monsters they had actually killed. The non depressed people guessed four to six times more than they had actually hit. Freud observed that the " melancholic ", has a keener eye for truth than others who are non melancholic.

(FOX News) - Singer Christina Aguilera was "not capable of taking care of herself" when she was arrested in Los Angles early Tuesday for public intoxication along with her boyfriend, who was taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence.

The Grammy Award-winning singer was "not capable of taking care of herself and was incapacitated," when police stopped the car her boyfriend Matthew Rutler was driving at 2:45am PT Tuesday, L.A. County Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore said in a press conference.

She was "not belligerent, just intoxicated," Whitmore said, adding that police took her into custody for her own safety.

The 30-year-old songstress was held in a county jail but once she could "fend for herself" and asked to leave she was released at about 7:30am PT, Whitmore said.

Aguilera's boyfriend, 25-year-old Rutler, was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and will likely be charged, Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Bill McSweeney told Fox News Channel.

Rutler's bail was set at $5,000.

As young people make the transition from their late teens to adulthood, their drinking practices may follow a variety of tracks, or trajectories. Some young adults will establish lifelong patterns of alcohol use. Others may engage in a particular pattern of alcohol use in their late teen or young adult years that later changes course. Still others may never engage in drinking or heavy drinking. Generally, people increase the amounts they drink as they progress through their early twenties, and decrease their drinking when they take on adult roles.

In this article, Drs. Jennifer L. Maggs and John E. Schulenberg describe both the average (or normative) pattern of alcohol use among young adults and the various subgroups of people whose drinking patterns follow different trajectories. They maintain that by identifying common trajectories of alcohol use during the transition to adulthood, researchers can gain a better understanding of how alcohol use disorders originate and evolve, how different trajectories lead to different outcomes, and how to plan prevention, diagnosis, and intervention. After peaking when young people are about 22 years old, heavy drinking rates among both college students and their nonstudent age-mates decline steadily, probably in response to the new roles and responsibilities that come with adulthood. Dr. Patrick M. O'Malley describes key transitions to adulthood and how they are associated either with increased drinking or with maturing out of alcohol use.

The first major change, moving out of the parental home, often coincides with increasing rates of heavy drinking among many young people, whether they attend college or not. College students then may be exposed to campus social environments that sometimes encourage excessive drinking. As adult responsibilities such as employment, marriage, and parenthood mount, problematic drinking declines, partly because of the limitations these responsibilities place on social activities in general and because of changes in young adults attitudes toward drinking.

Young alcohol users who would be diagnosed as alcohol dependent may be less affected by the more stabilizing, socializing effects of marriage and parenthood because of personality characteristics that make them less attracted to these choices, or because their drinking behavior is less susceptible to such influences.
